About us

Romanian Cancer Society is one of the founding organizations of the Federation of Associations of Cancer Patients (ABC). ABC works at the national level, and was formed in order to advocate and lobby for the rights of patients affected by cancer.

Services offered by the Society are provided exclusively through the work of volunteers, coordinated by the executive director. Through our programs, we are involved in advocacting the rights of patients with cancer, in psychological support groups, the improvement of communication between patients and medical personnel, as well as a the prevention and early detection of certain types of cancer, saving many lives.

Formation: 1993, through the initiative of a nucleus of medical personnel at the Ion Chiricuta Institute of Oncology in Cluj-Napoca.

Mission: The elimination of cancer as a major public health problem in Romania through a reduction in the deaths, morbidity and suffering that it produces.


Free Services

The Romanian Cancer Society offers the following services for people with cancer and for the general public:

  • Lymph edema information and treatment options. Lymph edema affects people that have had a malignant breast tumor removed. It is charaterized by an accumulation of liquid in the tissues caused by insufficient drainage of lymph glands that have been removed during the operation.

  • Support Groups for adults and children with cancer and their family, friends and caregivers, as well as separate groups for medical personnel. These groups are held at the Institute of Oncology and the Expert Center in Cluj, with the help of psychology students under the supervision of the University and specialized therapists. The groups have a role in minimizing the psychologic effects of the disease, as well as in helping patients find motivation for life.

  • Within the scope of our prevention program, RCS offers free testing for the early detection of cervical, breast and prostate cancer.

  • Provision of information through the mass media and the distribution of informative materials about different types of cancer and methods of prevention.

  • Breast prostheses and special support garments are available through limited sponsorships obtained through collaborating organizations.

The activities of the Romanian Cancer Society are coordinated by a Board of Directors consisting of seven people:
